Other questions and issues | Converting Help files to Ebook for off-line reading

Doesn't seem to be enough time in the day but waiting in line at the store, Doctors office, for dinner to cook (never leave food cooking, burnt charcoal tastes really bad) or sitting on the patio I read Ebooks on my Tablet, Phone (Galaxy Note) or Kindle. Android can't handle *.chm help files but can deal with PDF files but when you convert to PDF you lose the links of the document. I discovered Calibre not only converts CHM files to Ebook it retains the links! I converted the 4 DipTrace Help files to Ebook and now I can RTM instead of wasting time while waiting. The Calibre Companion Android app makes keeping my desktop and handheld devices in sync simple. DipTrace might want to make Ebook of the files with cover and ISBN numbers!

Exporting the copper, mask, and silk layers (combined) at a user selectable DPI (150, 300, 600 etc) PNG file would be great for the Decals.....

DipTrace PCB Layout | Re: PCB silk font question 171001

Hi Allen,
allenpitts wrote:"...Is it possible to change the font? The choices seem to be Vector and TrueType. Vector seems to be less pixelated than TrueType, but other than that there does not seem to be much difference. Is there a way of choosing a text font like, say, Arial?..."
Yes. Vector font is preferred for layouts because it consists of standard shapes (e.g. lines, arcs, etc) with constant line widths, which renders well in Gerber files (vector image). You can use TrueType fonts (raster image), but there is no guarantee how accurately they will be rendered in the Gerber format. It's always good practice to preview your Gerber files before sending them off for manufacture (PCB Layout Editor > File > Export > Gerber... > [Preview]). To change the font type and size right-click on the text, choose Font Type in the pop-up menu and click on TrueType in the fly-out menu. Right-click again on the text, choose Font... in the pop-up menu and make your selections in the Font dialog window.

allenpitts wrote:"...When an existing text is moused over there are four outlined squares at the corners. What does this mean?..."
This shows the entire area that the text block occupies. It can be left dragged to a new location as long as you avoid grabbing one of the corners. To coarsely resize the text in increments equal to the grid size, diagonally left-drag one of the corners.

allenpitts wrote:"...When an existing text is clicked four filled squares at the corners. What does this mean?..."
This means the object has been selected for the next operation. Right-clicking in an empty section of the Design Area will deselect the object and return the editor to the Default Mode if it isn't there already.

allenpitts wrote:"...In a domain different from text, currently all the pads near the edge are circled with red circles when Verification > Check Design Rules. Perhaps Dip Trace is saying that the pads are too close to the edge. But the pads are intended to be used for right angle headers to connect one board to the other for an IC cascade. Are the circles saying the pads are too close to the edge? Can this warning be ignored?..."
Press softkey F9 to see the DRC report on all of those design rule violations. DRC warnings can be ignored as long as you are sure they will not affect the manufacturability of the PCB.

The small square indicates that there is no connection. Looking at the cursor will usually tell you which mode you are in. You need to exit the Edit Trace mode and return to the Default Mode to work on text. To return to the Default Mode, right-click in an empty section of the Design Area.

Thanks Tom...I found the menu under "View". I'd never used that before nor had even seen it. There are "nooks and crannys" in the software that are still new to me I guess. Thanks!

Making Libraries in DipTrace | Re: DerekG Altium conversion tips

Thanks for posting this, Gerrit. As a side note for anyone not familiar with the Diptrace rotation feature in the PCB Layout editor, it's pretty straightforward. There are two methods...
1) Right-click on the component (not its pads), select Define Angle in the pop-up menu, choose Custom... in the fly-out menu, enter the desired angle in the Rotation Angle dialog window and click on OK.
- or -
2) Double-click on the component (not its pads), enter the desired value for Angle: in the lower-left side of Component Properties dialog window and click on OK (see illustration).

It is also possible to group-rotate a set of components (rotate as a single, unified object)...
1) Group all of the desired components together (standard grouping - not grouping into a component) by selecting/highlighting them and executing the standard group command (Ctrl + G).
2) Right-click on the newly-formed group (any of its components, not a pad), choose Define Angle in the pop-up menu, select Custom... in the fly-out menu, enter the desired angle in the Rotation Angle dialog window and click on OK.
3) If needed, ungroup the still-selected group of components (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Add a "[X]Display Net Names" option to the View Menu of the PCB Layout editor to enable the displaying of net names inside traces. See the illustration below for an example of how this could be implemented...

Feature requests | Via in SMD pad

$

I've been working with 3.5mm phone jacks and barrel power connectors, a couple of suppliers suggested adding via to the SMD pad to help support the Jack. So I tried it:
Attachmentsnail.JPG

in 3D
Attachmentsnail1.JPG

I built this with PCB editor, made one PAD and added 4 via's, cut and pasted then renamed all pads but I had to rename each via to pin 9 (Why did vias pick up the need for a pad number?). Built a component with 9 pins and added the pattern after saving it into a pattern library (NOTE: Bug, the PCB Editor created the pattern but when saved as a component to a library I don't have a means to name the pattern, I have to open the pattern editor and select the blank space then name it.) I created a PCB and placed the pattern:
Attachmentsnail2.jpg

I appears this will work and I believe if I rename the via to 9 (last pin number + 1) before copying it this won't be so labor intensive.

My Suggestion would be a tool that allows placing nail down vias on SMD pads as arrays without associating pin numbers with the vias.

Bug reports | Truetype font in mask layer not rendering in 3D

Hello,

If I put some true type text on the mask layer then render to 3D, I don't see the mask "ant-text". If I change the font to Vector, I can see it fine.

Running layout 3.1.0.1 on Windows 10, Windows GDI renderer. Switching to OGL or D3D has no affect. If I export to Gerber, I see it fine......

Not that I am aware of. If you paste using Ctrl + V the copy will be offset from the original, making it a little easier to select for a layer change.

I have successfully imported a Protel format Orcad netlist generated using the orprotel264.dll formatter. This can be selected in the list of formatters on the "other" tab in the Create Netlist dialog in Capture.

Hi Andrew,
What Gerber viewer do you use?
Some CAM software(s) do not handle macros with rotation. Few users have problem with manufactured boards because of that. This is not DipTrace fault but we have to change Gerber export to avoid such problem.
